KENYA

Kenya has always encapsulated the true essence of safari, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a destination with a more diverse or beautiful variety of offerings.

It’s not only because Kenya is the Roberts family home that we think there’s nowhere quite like it for safari. Collected within the bounds of a single nation, a mere hop away unrolls endless savannah, mountains and desert, islands and lakes, and places of beauty that are populated by a truly staggering abundance of wildlife… Not to mention the richness of its culture, with its myriad proud tribes, languages, customs, and ancient beliefs.

Best time to travel: Kenya is one of those magical destinations that is fantastic all year round.

Experience Kenya

No other African country has the diversity of landscape and wildlife as our beloved Kenya. From the mountain tundra’s to the gleaming Indian Ocean, the northern deserts to the never-ending vista of the Masai Mara, there really is something for everyone. In designing this itinerary, we have combined what we really feel to be the very best of Kenya, not only family-owned by boasting the very best areas of Kenya for a fantastic itinerary. OneFortyEight, Sirikoi and Richard’s Camp.

Listen to lions by candlelight

Aside the hippos that grace its lawn and the thoroughfare of wildlife wending its way from Mara North to the Loita Plains, Richard's River Camp shares its turf with a sizeable pride of lion. Come nightfall, lanterns glimmer light onto rock faces and calm pools, illuminating a table for two by the riverside. Under the starry silence of an African sky, nothing breathes life into the wilderness quite like the guttural roar of a predator reverberating through the night.

Wildernesses and Wildlife

To visit the Maasai Mara is to understand why the heart of safari truly does lie in Kenya: there’s nowhere quite like it for its staggering diversity and unending plethora of wildlife. And what makes it better yet is the freedom afforded to us by the exclusivity of the private conservancies: unlimited game drives, day and night, on road and off; safaris on foot; meals in the midst of the bush – and hardly another soul around.

Be Wildly Romantic

Get to grips with your wild side as you roam the dry, hot Samburu landscape in quads and buggies, bumbling through riverbeds and over rocks, past beautiful birds, elephant and ostriches… Wend your way to your flycamp and slumber under the stars with nothing but a mosquito net between you and the sky, feeling the breath of a wind that has travelled untold miles brush your face with its warmth.

Get Down in the Great Rift

Take in the beauty of the Great Rift Valley and Cradle of Humankind by sky, skimming over dramatic mountain ranges, mystically misty forests, and millions of flamingos bejewelling sparkling lakes. This ancient valley that once threatened to tear Africa in two proffers a range of landscapes like nowhere else on earth: dip down from craggy outcrops to arid flatlands, and swoop up to lush fertile woodlands with stops to fish, camp and picnic along the way.

Wild Tribes in Wild Lands

Kenya’s borders encompass a colourful cacophony of languages, tribes and histories, some remote and rich enough to have remained intact and untouched. Their traditions and ceremonies bring rain, celebrate marriage, circumcision, and rites of passage – and open a window of insight into a life lived in close communion with the gods of nature. Our close connections and long history with these incredible folk have earned us the trust to be part of these sacred festivals, and, in turn, to share them with you.

Breakfast with Rhinos

When we first visited this beautiful park, it had had but 16 visitors in a year – and it remains our secret, and a true treat for the safari connoisseur. Take a morning’s flight to the edge of Lake Victoria’s lapping waters, and feast on a sumptuous breakfast in a wild grassy savannah, amid Africa’s last bastion of rhino. Spend some time on the calm tranquility of the lake before flying back in time for an ice-cold gin and tonic, and a Maasai Mara sunset.
